i'm getting sooo discouraged.. for the past week and a 1/2 my weight has just been bouncing back and forth between a couple of pounds.. 179-182, i'm not losing anything and i'm not gaining anything.. is there anyway to break through this and start losing weight again? more exercise is a little bit difficult due to the fact that i live in an area that is still covered w/ snow and ice.. :( any good inside ideas for me? thanks..

I'm in a major plateau myself - I call it the "stagnation period". Don't be discouraged. Almost all dieters hit this "wall". I just read an article where a 300+ pound man lost 100 pounds. But early in his dieting, he hit a wall at 280 pounds and was there for 2 months! The trick is to just stick with it. Our bodies are going through changes. The weight we lost early on in our dieting was "easy" to lose (relatively speaking) because we almost "shocked" our bodies. Suddenly we went from overconsuming fattening, unhealthy foods, to eating lower amounts of far healthier food. We went from not moving at all to exercising at least a bit. As a result, our bodies responded. But after a while, our bodies adjusted. So we might have to just go through this period before the weight loss kicks in again. Also, you might want to try other tricks. Do different exercises. I noticed for the past few months, I pushed more on the aerobic exercise than the weight-lifting. I thought the aerobics would help lose this stomach bugle. As it's not working, I'm now going to shift back to more weight-lifting to see if that helps. Also, I'm going to keep a journal to track the food I eat. I know I'm eating well, but I think I eat too much. This will be a chance for me to see exactly what I'm eating. So you may need to do the same - you may have to cut back even further on your consumption or monitor what you are eating. You may find that you are eating too much fat, so you might want to cut back on that. Or maybe too many carbs, so you might want to cut back on those. In other words, mixing up your food or your exercise could help snap you out of this rut. That's what I plan on doing!

for the most part i've been keeping calories down around 1200 or even less (i even write down everything in a journal to keep track) .. i cut out regular soda completely, chocolate (though i have caved a few times), pasta, i only eat bread (wheat) in the morning or before noon.. i've been walking about 30 minutes a day (when i remember to or it's not too cold out) and doing crunches and other random exercises that i find in magazines(though i could be exercising a lot more than i have been) , i've always eaten fruit and veggies so now i just watch which ones have more calories.. thats just what makes it soo disappointing, i am a stay at home mom and i've changed my eating habits quite a bit(i live w/ my parents at the moment too).. it is so different from how i used to eat, and i still crave a lot of bad foods(the ones that my son and dad eat).. but i am saying no so i can lose weight.. i hate not seeing the effort. is diet soda bad for you?? i guess i have that at least once a day.. ahh..

Try eating more and see if this helps believe it or not it's helped me before :D

[quote:33694c26c6="BrandyMcK"]Try eating more and see if this helps believe it or not it's helped me before :D[/quote:33694c26c6] There is some truth in this. In the [b:33694c26c6][u:33694c26c6][i:33694c26c6]Chunk to Hunk[/b:33694c26c6][/i:33694c26c6][/u:33694c26c6] book, the author, Fred Anderson, talks about how he tried a special diet late in his weight loss program where he would consume as much as 10,000 calories on one day a week! For the rest of the week, he exercised and followed a low-cal diet as usual. He said, that after consuming lots of calories on a Friday, the following Monday he did observe a drop in his weight. So it is something to consider. However, I recommend this for people who have established their diet/exercise programs. If one is just starting or early in his/her weight-loss program, this might not work. I say this only because I fear that slipping off the diet for one day like this might lead to one slipping for two days, then three, etc. Plus, early on in our weight loss programs, we tend to beat ourselves up every time we slip. So it's better not to do this until later in our programs. In an effort to help me break past my plateau, I am keeping a journal as I wrote above. For the first week, I noticed I was indeed consuming far too much food and not exercising enough. The exercise part was obvious to me, but the food part was a bit of a surprise - I never realized just how much I ate. So now I'm on a very low-cal diet trying to do some moderate exercise. And indeed, for the token few days I've followed this, I have seen pounds come off. The big goal, of course, is to follow this for 6 weeks or more to really lose weight. And I'm still keeping the journal. It's a challenge to write down every little bit of food one eats (plus, all the exercises), but it helps me be focused.

Another thing you might want to do to break through your plateau is to mix your exercise up a bit. if you aren't doing any, try to get your body moving a bit. If your body gets used to doing the same thing every day, it adjusts to that. What kind of exercise(s) are you doing?

i don't actually do much exercise at the moment, i was doing really good for a little while, i even got a tae bo tape to try to help speed up the process. but my diet wasn't working for me, it gave me the option to each foods that weren't good for me and i used up daily calories for chocolate and junk food. which didn't help the hunger. so i lost my willpower in a way, I've sense changed diets to see if something a little more restrictive with what i can and can not eat will help. since the weather has gotten considerably nicer i'm going to be walking again, every day, for 45 min. plus i do free weights for about 20, and then i'm going to throw tae bo in there. i will do this, i will do this, i will do this. as of this morning my weight was 177(i want to be 172 by april 5th). I think this new diet is okay (i've been on it for only a few days but i like it). But we'll see if it helps w/ weight loss. Though i'm not hungry anymore, and thats a plus. So to everyone, keep up hope. And please keep me updated on even the smallest of accomplishments, I need them more than ever right now.

Well, I think I've hit a plateu now. I've been at 185 give or take two pounds for two weeks. I hope that I break through it this week! AF lll

i think spring will help break a lot of plateaus. with it getting warmer and the days getting longer, the cabin fever is about to break. yesterday was really nice here (looking good for today, too) so i went went to the zoo with my hubby, my sister and her 2 kids. we walked (and walked) for 3 1/2 hours. add carrying a 30 pound 2 year old on and off through the day, and it has to count for something!

Plateaus are the toughest part of dieting. You need to remain focused and not get worn down. Just hang in there, because once you break through the plateau, you usually get a nice boost in weight loss.

I have hit a plateau with my weight but i am not getting down because i am losing inches and seeing muscle definition. Cant wait for the weight to start droping again

The inches matter more. Muscle weighs more than fat so you end up staying the same for awhile. But its most important how you feel in your clothes.
