:) I'm new to the site and need to loose about 100 pounds. I simple plan to eat smart (like I know I can) and exercise. I believe if I start with the journal, the rest will fall into place. In the past, when I started to exercise, I would get sick or hurt myself. I've had sinus surgery and knee surgery and now my hurdles will be out of the way. But so will my excuses and I'm a bit scared. I'm not fully recovered from the knee surgery, but I'm close. I have to get the weight off because of cartilage damage. But mostly because I've noticed that healthy people are much happier. So what I'm wondering is: Do you keep a journal? Do you hide it from your coworkers? When do you fill it out? What do you put in your journal? I've lost weight with Weight Watchers before - but for me its so much work and so much thinking about food - it drove me nuts. That is why I want to be less formal. If you've read this far, Thanks Just writing helps me feel better Val

hi val and welcome aboard! ive been keeping a journal, although i havent done a great job of it. the main thing that chronicling your experiences does is it lets you look and see if you're making real progress. sometime you think you are stuck and that its taking a long time. generally you can check your journal and get a bit of a reality check. all in all its a good idea to keep records when trying to accomplish a goal.

I personally do keep a journal. I'm not the most experienced weightloser (I'm only 16) but I've always kept journals for everything else. It helps keep things in perspective, and also I find it thereputic(?sp?) for getting out excitement or frustration. My mother has read my diaries a couple times and the experience ruined journaling for me for a while, but now I'm keeping a journal on here, because I don't worry about people reading it and being judged by the things I write, because the users of this site all inevitably share my common ground. Like you say: Just writing it down can make you feel better.

Hi Val, Keeping a journal adds a bit of discipline to your approach to something. Its probably a good idea, especially when you have a specific goal in mind. Not to be overly metaphysical, but writing down a goal is the first step in the process of making it happen. It sets the wheels in motion and gets you motivated. At the risk of sounding corny, you can start your Journal off with a contract to yourself. Set your start weight, your goal weight and the time frame in which to complete your goal. Also, write the specifics of this contract to yourself, in particular what you give up and what you get in return. Once you've outlined your plan the only thing left to do is be true to yourself and realize your dreams. I use message board posting as a way of Journalizing my daily life. I can go back and find different posts I've made on certain days and it gives me an overview of my life and how its going. Welcome aboard and good luck with your weight loss attempt. BigAl

After writing in here the other day, I went out and bought a journal. I wrote down my goals and set up a place for starting weight, measurements, and picture. I kept track of everything I ate and am proud to say that I kept my calorie intake at 1,234. I just went to bed and stopped eating. YEAHH!!! I'm back here tonight to try for a little more inspiration for day 2. I feel better already so I wanted to say thanks for responding. It helped to force myself to go brush my teeth, put on some whitener, wash my face, and have what I keep calling a "bedtime routine." Like a little kid. I figure beautiful women go through alot more than that every night so I could do some pampering.
