It wouldn't be surprising. I wish I could give you some insight, but I quit drinking soda a LONG time ago. I can offer that I was much heavier when I drank soda, if that counts for anything :?
I drink diet soda all the time. (about 1 or 2 a day) I don't ever feel it making me more hungry.. but that is an interesting thought... hmmmm I have never "just drank water". I wonder if it would "fill me up" more than other beverages. I think it just makes me urinate more (sorry.. not trying to be crude) Anyhow... let me know if you find anything out on this... AF lll
water is the key to everything. if you drink enough of it you return to a nature hydrated state. you become thirsty for water only and you feel a lot better. plus your skin and teeth become healthier. there is absolutely every reason in the world to try to make water your primary beverage and in large amounts.
I've read that once you feel thirsty you've already started becoming dehydrated. That you should water throughout the day, not just when you're thirsty. Especially true during hot weather. EllieFunt
yep. just drink it all day long. and you know what? it sure is cheap drink. you can fill up a one gallon washed out milk carton and keep it in the fridge. mmmm. nice cool beverage and its free!
Yes, yes, yes! I have been a Type 1 diabetic all my life and have gone on and off diet soda again and again. I do think that it makes me hungrier and never really quenches my thirst so I drink even more of it. After having 2 children, I wanted to lose some weight and struggled to lose even a few pounds. When I replaced Diet Coke (my usual beverage of choice) with water, I actually managed to drop a few pounds. I had cut back a lot while I was pregnant and still had a very hard time giving it up completely. But that's what it took... I used to jokingly say that I got so much exercise from walking to the bathroom the extra weight was bound to come off. I later learned when your body metabolizes fat, it produces water so I really was going more often. Good luck! Jen
Hey Jen... Why is it you think that you lost weight when switching from a diet soda to water? It doesn't make any sense to me. (I'm not trying to be a jerk.. I'm serious about my question) I would think that it wouldn't make a difference when it comes to weight loss... Not that you don't need to drink water mind you.. obviously I do drink a lot of water.. But why would it cause you to lose even more weight if you switched from diet soda to water is what I don't understand?! ~looks around for Jen or anyone who might have the answer~ AF lll
AF - I don't have an answer. I have a few guesses though... 1) it could be that the sodium in the soda made me retain more water 2) it could be that the NurtiSweet chemicals or the caffiene in the soda made me crave more sweets or 3) it could be just coincidental timing. I'm not a doctor or a scientist but I do know my body better than anyone in the world, and diet soft drinks have a detrimental effect on my weight loss efforts (even without raising my blood sugar -I've checked!). I truly believe this and yet I STILL drink them. I recommend that we try an experiement... diet as normal for 45 days and then try 45 days with no "diet" soda and compare results. Anyone interested in a "sans soda" challenge before summer? Jen
I used to just drink water, but now my doctor is making me drink soda's and I found that now that I have added soda's to my diet I do get a lot hungrier a lot faster....
fact or fiction? hard to say.. 4tun8 does have a point though. just because it's "diet" and doesn't contain calories doesn't change the fact that it still contains sodium and other chemicals that might affect your body in one way or another. the marketing companies behind these products aren't going to say, that's for sure!
why would a doctor tell you to drink soda? i might ask for a second opinion! i hate to sound like an h20 evangelist but believe me, water is our friend. aqua! aqua! agua! -- sorry, broke out into the water chant
I agree with 4tun8, I think it's the chemicals, the nutrasweet or whatever sugar substitute they use that triggers something that makes you hungy. (wonder how many soda companies own snack companies? ) I craved sweets and carbs when drinking my diet soda's. Now everything seems to be under control now that I've cut back on the soda. Ellie
i heard a stat one day on the news which shocked me. it said that 30,000 chemicals have been introduced into the american diet since 1970! who knows what most of them are?
Hey 4tun8... Let's do a month long challenge instead. Month of March with diet soda (no more than you usually drink) Month of April without diet soda (replaced ALWAYS with water) Are you down? I'm down like a submarine... I'm down like four flat tires.... I'm down! ~looks to her for a response~ AF lll
I will do it! I wish that we could encourage some who still drink a lot of soda to try it for a month. I think many of us have already cut back dramatically so we may not see a big difference. I'm in Dr. Suess mode still from my daughter's bedtime stories: I will do it - I am bent I will give it up for lent! Anyone else in, or down? or up for it?? Jen
I would have joined you but I've already given it up, I would hate to get back into it. It was such a hard habit to break. Let me know how it goes, I'm really really curious. Obviously since I was having the same problem. Love the Dr. Suess! Ellie
Allright Jen.. you and I and anyone else who wants a piece of this action: Month of March WITH diet sodas (regular intake) Month of April WITHOUT diet sodas (always replaced with water) Compare weight loss difference and report back here on the forum! W00T! AF lll
i can honestly say i don't remember the last time i had soda, diet or otherwise. you guys are gonna be very happy when you give it up!
I drink LOTS of water, but I do like to change and diet sodas or diet teas provide that. One possible reason for increased hunger is that lots of diet sodas and teas contain caffeine. Caffeine will trigger an insulin response and make you feel hungry. Therefore, try to avoid the caffeinated diet drinks. My favorite is Fresca! If someone had told me that they made a grapefruit-flavored diet soda, I would have cringed. Yet, that's what Fresca is and it's great. It also has no caffeine. You can also buy diet powder teas without caffeine. If you are like me, sometimes water just isn't enough - I like a little flavor. Crystal Light is also a nice alternative as it adds flavor to the water, without caffeine. Also, some of fruit-flavored waters that have no caffeine and no sugar. They are tasty and refreshing. If you've tried all of the non-caffeinated diet products and still feel hungry, well, maybe you just ARE hungry. LOL! However, if you know that's not the case (for example, you just ate), then try water or other non-caffeinated diet products to see if you can find something that works for you.
Doc, I am still wondering about your explanation about caffeine causing an insulin response... I am a type I diabetic, my body has not produced any insulin on it's own for over 30 years! Because I wear an insulin pump, I know when I am getting insulin. I do not take a bolus of insulin when I drink diet caffeined soda and I still feel more hungry or thirsty afterward. Do you have any more information about this? Also, if anyone wants to know more about wearing an insulin pump, it's a topic I am glad to discuss anytime! Jen
As a treat on Friday we ordered a pizza (haven't had one in ages!) I also picked up a 2 lt. of diet soda. You know ever since that evil soda has been in this house I have been craving chocolate and salty snacks! I'm curious to hear how the soda challenge comes out! My husband thinks I'm nuts since he drinks regular soda and never has any cravings! never gains a lb. either! But he has a very active job and burns every calorie off! Ellie
Hi Ellie! Me too! We had pizza (and diet soda) for dinner tonight and now I am down in my husbands office raiding his candy drawer. I figured I'd log on for inspiration and once again this awsome site preventing me from eating! I wasn't "blaming" the soda, I was just thinking... "hey, I already blew my calories for today, I might as well eat whatever I want" (Yes, it is clear to me why I have a weight problem!) I am still planning to give up the soda and compare weight loss next month. I am trying to make the switch to water, not Crystal Light or Fresca, but it's hard... I'm a creature of habit (even when they're bad!). Thanks for the distraction - I'm back on track (for the moment...) Jen
I LOVE diet soda (diet pepsi). I find it very hard to drink water, I don't like it. Sounds dumb eh? I have found that if I add crystal lite to it I'll drink it, but is that any better than soda?
4tun8.. Glad to hear that you skipped a treat after logging in. I think that is exactly what everyone is here for! :) Pizza isn't bad really. I think it is only "bad" if you eat a whole pizza packed with high calorie toppings that might run you into some trouble. Keep up the good work everyone!
The kind of pizza I have is bad.. ~smirks~ Hi all.. just got back from vacation.. and I wasn't terribly bad.. but I wasn't terribly good either.. I'm at 187.8 this morning.. was down to 185.6 when I left on vacation.. but my goal for this morning for the Easter Challenge was 187.4 so I'm right in the ballpark. Anyway.. hello to all my featherish friends! AF lll
u lucky dog u AF lll i want a vacation!!!!! :? whining
~smiles at scorchin with a wink~ WOOF
