Hi Yori! :welcome The tapes are a good idea to get started. You can work out in the privacy of your own home and get into it a bit. But I will tell you one thing, it's not like you will be the heaviest person at most gyms these days. America really is having an obesity epidemic and many people at my local club are really very heavy. I guess it makes sense, the people who need it most are working out. There is no reason to feel self concious when attempting to get yourself back in shape. I think almost everyone respects someone who is trying to fix something wrong.
i say join the gym! its great to get out of the house and exercise. the house is for house things and the gym is for working out. it makes it easy to divide it into your mind. if you look at working out as a job you will have good results. like any jobs there are days you don't want to go in, but you do. if you make exercise a routine like that in your life, it will never be a chore again.
i also dont have the money to go to the gym a ymca membership is also too expensive. and i live in the great white north (upper michigan) and it is too cold to go out side and when its not too cold there is too much snow infact they are calling for a masive snowstorm tomarrow.
Work out videos are great if you can't get to a gym. The only problem that i have with them is that they can get very repeditive and then you can lose intrest. I would recomend that you get a couply more so that you can change it up day to day. GOOD LUCK
well the good news is it won't be cold for long!
bigboy- have you ever lived in upper michigan? we just got dumped on again about 1-2 feet of snow again
..it's great that you are doing exercise videos. if you get bored with the ones that you have, check out your local library and see if they have videos available for checkout. kickboxing is a lot of fun, but it takes some conditioning before you can just jump in. i took a few classes at a karate studio, and it is another form of dicipline. in bare feet on a hard wood floor, we had to bear crawl (on your hands and feet) around the studio for like 10 minutes to warm up. if you haven't been active (and even if you already are) this is pretty hard, but not impossible to do. then the class started.. :) so if you are really serious, getting fit is like climbing a ladder. you go up it rung by rung. maybe set a goal of getting your body into better shape, and then taking that kickboxing class. it's a lot of fun, but it takes some work, so just be sure to keep that in mind. and as for the weather, i am confident that we won't be able to blame our inactivity on that for very much longer!
In the midwest today it's a balmy 50%! The sun even peeked out for a second. Summer is coming!
i hate the winter
In direct contrast to BigBoy, I *love* working out at home. Of course, I also go for walks (I love walking in the snow - alas, after December, not much snow fell where I live in New England). I don't walk in the frigid cold mostly because I walk with my dog and it's just not safe for him. But now that we are flirting with the 50's, he loves walking! Getting back to working out at home... I have two exercise machines. I have them because I know I will use them - and I do. But that's just me - use what you can afford and what works. If videotapes work for you, go for it! It's far better than doing nothing at all. What I love about working out at home is that I can do this any time I want. Sometimes I'll work out in the morning, sometimes at night - and on weekends, it's usually the afternoon. Sometimes I'm lazy, but near the end of the day, I'll do several repititions of chest and arm exercises. Sometimes I only have the strength for 10-15 minutes on my exercise bike. So be it. I figure doing at least a few repititions or doing 15 minutes of biking is better than doing nothing at all. Plus, if I had to go to the gym to do this, I'd never go. I know me - the thought of going to a gym does NOT appeal to me at all. For others, the gym is perfect. But I like the freedom and ease of working out from home. So do what works for you. The advantages to working out at home are numerous: time, no hassles with the weather, often less expensive, no renewing membership fees, working out whenever, no need to share equipment or wait to use/view a tape, etc. Others like the comradery from a gym and they feel more motivated. But again, do what works for you. The big thing is that you are moving. Most people don't like exercise. Like you, I'd rather not do it either! LOL! However, I like the fact that it's helped me lose 50 pounds. I'm starting to see and feel more muscles (even if there's still a lot of fat). And there is an exhiliration from exercising. So be sure to do something. Good luck!
[quote:2221b4c418="yori"]i hate the winter[/quote:2221b4c418] i'm pretty sure everyone does. i know i do. :P
it's great to hear that you are doing so well doc. yori, you have to find the kind of exercise that works best for you, and of course, affordability is an issue. if you have the money, the gym isn't a scary place. most people there aren't like the people you think they are (models with perfect bodies) the place that i go to has a lot of elderly folks. it doesn't matter what shape your in. everyone is there for the same purpose. that is to get/stay/be in shape. as doc says, if you are more comfortable in your home, there is no reason not to work out there. you just have to make sure that you do it. whatever you decide i'm sure you will make the right call.
Hey I like the winter. It nice and cold, But autums best! :P
Hi Yori....I know where you are coming from, my parents are in the U.P. also. I know the few times I was there in winter, I had to do a 20 yard dash to get firewood so I didn't freeze....hey...that is a good place to start! But then again, just shoveling yourself out after each snow fall would qualify as a workout... even the sweeping the snow off the side walk make a difference...jog in place in front of the fireplace for 5 minutes..and work up from there.
