Has anyone here or know of anyone personally that has stayed on the atkins plan for LIFE??? I dont mean to critize really I am just curious as to if any of the weight loss DIETS that are being used can really be maintained long term?? while I personally am eating fewer calories per day I am MOSTLY trying to replace bad habits with good new ones like using splenda instead of sugar using cooking sprays instead of fat or marg or butter, opting for low cholestrol varieties of foods instead of the higher ones. Eating less meat more poultry and more fruits and veggies. it seem to be working for me I cant stand the smell of Burger King any more when I pass it and i find myself choosing the low cal variety of foods BEFORE the full calories versions and I am not depriving myself of anything! Like I said just wondering

You bring up a good point. And it's one that we've raised before around here. There is so much hype these days about Atkins that it is likely to get out of control. I also think Atkins is confusing people. People are now associating high fat and high protein food as healthy and all carbs as "bad". You hit the nail on the head, you need to be able to change habits for life. And no, I don't think too many people can eat eggs and cheese forever.

it seems unrealistic to think that you can NEVER eat bread, pasta or potatoes for the rest of your life. as soon as you do you gain a bunch of weight back almost instantly. of course there are people out there that "give something up" and never eat it again. there is this old guy that sells a juicer on saturday mornings and he claims he NEVER has dairy (including chocolate) and hasn't for over 50 years, there is a bunch of other stuff he doesn't eat.. i guess it can be done if you really had the will :)

I eat a lot less bread than I used to, so I will credit Atkin's with that. Plus I do agree that carbs leave you hungry, so I have cut some carbs. But sausage, steak, eggs, and cheese as primary sources of nutrition concern me.

.. Bad news for Dr. Atkins and his "low carb" diet. Turns out he was had a BMI that classified him as being "obese" http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040210/ap_on_he_me/atkins_medical_report

man that is ironic! atkins was fat. bloomberg got in trouble for making a comment about the same thing. i also for sure don't think people can ignore carbs for the rest of their lives. especially fruit and some pastas.

I am doing mostly the same thing just replacing the bad for the good and it seems to be helping.I even feel more entergetic, its great.
