It would be the number 56. If there is more than one serving, you would have to take the "Number Per Serving" and multiply it by however many servings it has.
I found this nice site that explains a lot about reading food labels. It's kind of lengthy but provides a lot of information.. http://www.fda.gov/opacom/backgrounders/foodlabel/newlabel.html Hope that helps a bit :)
QueenBee - Thank you I will check it out ! Thanks again :D
I feel it is easiest to just use the total calories. And if you're setting some sort of carb target you can count those as well, but total calories is the safest bet.
Henrietta - Thank you ! :D
Hey Bible, How did that cheese and cracker diet go? I'm pretty new to the site, and I was reading all about it then suddenly it stoped. Did you meet the goal of 64 lbs before thanksgiving? What was the follow up?
If I had to guess, the cheese and crackers diet did not work. Woman can not live on cheese and crackers alone.
well , I faild on the cheese and crackers  But I am trying to stick with the 1000 calorie plan . What are you doing to lose the weight ? :D
To Bible, I'm in need of a good diet plan. But for now I'm trying to add things into my daily diet that I have been lacking. Low fat milk, (I didn’t drink any) more water, more fruits and veggies, I'm eating nuts & seeds instead of chips. Low calorie margarine instead of butter. I have lost about 5 lbs in about 3 months (which isn't very good) I need to lose about 55. But I did lower my cholesterol. I’m also walking the dogs again at night. I just couldn't see myself going on a starvation diet. I think if I tried to cut back to 1000 calorie a day I would end up bingeing so bad I’d weigh more then I started. In the past I tried Weight Watcher and Atkins. I’ve been reading the Insulin Resistant Diet book but it’s a little confusing for me. I lost 20 lbs on WW 2 years ago but binged myself 10 lbs heavier then I started, after the “diet.” The other thing that holds me up is (I know it’s just an excuse according to Dr. Phil) I have Hashimoto’s Thyroid Disease. Anyway, I think it’s pretty cool that you are putting yourself out there and actually writing about your diet ups and downs. I just saw that you were on trim spa? How’s that working?
Momma-dog, You have already started doing the basic things. You have to know yourself first. And if a certain plan won't work for you, don't bother with it. But generally the substitutions you speak of are a good idea. If you can cut out some of the heavier items and replace them with better alternatives on a daily basis, it goes a long way to losing weight.
Wow sounds like your doing good on your food choices . The trim spa worked a little but then I stoped taking it big mistake because the pills didnt work ever sence I stoped taking it . Maybe I should take 2 in stead of one . I just hate poping pills you know . I know what you mean when you eat a low calorie plan that you end up over eating . I do that alot . I am addacted to food and the way I am going is wrong . I feel like I am on a train and the train is going faster and faster and I am just sitting there in a daze look knowing if I don't stop the train I will crash and die . right now I am on the fast train as we speak and I am not even close to the brakes .
Time to pull the chain and hit the breaks! Just take your time and get back to brass tacks!
I would love to pull on the brakes but I cant even find it ! :(
i'm addicted to food too. matter of fact, everyone is addicted to food! without it we would die. plus there is no reason to be hard on yourself. consider this: the average person alive now eats like a king did 100 years ago! our stores are stacked with tons and tons of food choices, almost all of them bad. you are not alone in gaining weight because of it. in fact, it really is a nationwide epidemic. all you have to do is try to keep in mind what's important to you. if the goals are strong enough the results will be too.
Thanks Guys your words are encouraging! Some times when I'm full from eating I keep going and I don't know why. Some times I eat until I feel sick. When I smoked it was the same. After I smoked a whole pack in a day my lungs would actually hurt but I still light another one. I did quit though. But eating is so different. Like BigBoy said if you don't eat you die. Eating better (dieting) seems a whole lot harder then to quit smoking. I know I need to eat and I knew smoking would kill me.
Food is everywhere and marketing for food is very intense. So its best to not attempt to quit eating! I have been eating 4 to 5 times a day lately. I had to really force myself to do this for a few weeks. What I'm finding is that I'm much less hungry overall and the snacking is way down, plus I'm losing weight. I'm eating a lot chicken, salad, and fruits and vegetables and I feel good! "Dieting" does not have to be tough. Make it fun!
i get what you both are saying. i felt that way when i was hooked on cigarettes. i was pretty sure for a long time that smoking would kill me and i was pretty sure i couldn't quit. one day i had enough of this type of crappy thinking and snapped out of it. i used the patch to quit and it was easy because the decision was made. you can snap the food addiction the same way. it only exists if you let it. and if its a compulsion that may drive you to your death, you need to battle it and win. its worth a doctors visit. if you've been battling this for a bit, go to the doctor and ask for a specific recommendation on what path you need to follow. then you have to follow it. but i can tell you that if you set your mind to fixing whatever this "food problem" is, its going to be worth it because we need as much health as we can have to have good quality lifes.
I don't think everyone is addicted to food Addicted to food means you cant stop eating , you keep eating until you can't eat anymore . Food is on your mind all the time on when and where and how will I get the food .
I understand what Big Boy is saying that without food you can't survive but, I also believe that food addiction is a real problem. Meaning that people who use food for other then nourishment. People who consistently eat out of stress, boredom, loneliness, anger, and basically any kind of emotional eating may be considered food addicts. (My opinion) I often feel I'm addicted to food because I know my overeating my be harmful to my health but I am having a hard time stopping. Sometime it feels I'm out of control.
BigBoy, ..."it only exists if you let it".... I feel like saying to you... Dah! ...but I know that's rude. Do you think we didn't know that?????? Do you really think a person that is 55 pounds overweight and is concerned enough to write about it hasn't consulted his/her doctor?
I don't think that BigBoy meant it any kind of a "rude" way, but more to motivate. I can't speak for everyone, but I know a lot of people that really DO think that the way their life is right now is the way it always has to be. This isn't only concerning weight issues, but a lot of other situations people find themselves in life ( abusive/ bad relationships, finances, etc. etc. ) Getting to the root cause of "why" we do things that can potentially harm us, I think, is very important. Understanding and dealing with it is the next step.. There is a good article on the frontpage that might be worth reading if you happen upon a chance..
