That is a good question. Most cereals serving sizes are 1 cup. I would almost guess most people don't measure how much they pour in a bowl. Especially if they're 3 years old :) I have never cared for Grape Nuts or Kix cereal. Special K and Total are a lot tastier (IMHO) or Oatmeal. I think that it is very cool that you are teaching your daughter about portion sizes and eating healthy. More moms out there should be doing the same thing! I was reading that many habits are developed in the first 4 years of a kids life. If this is correct you are starting your daughter on some good footing! I commend you for teaching her this important lesson! How is the weight loss going for you?
Hi BBW! Thanks for your encouragement for teaching my daughter. I am not actually trying to lose more weight right now. I am 5'7" and currently weigh 147. I'd love to lose a few more pounds but I made a deal with myself to just maintain through the end of the year. As you may have read elsewhere, I started to diet last June when I weighed 178. I stuck to it strictly until October. I was diligent about measuring portions and stuck to 1100 calories/day. My goal was to be 145 when I went on a business trip with my husband. I almost made it and had a nice vacation, but after we got back I lost my motivation. I made a sort of deal with myself to maintain the healthy lifestyle choices but loosen up on my self-imposed strict discipline and enjoy the holidays. My husband is a great guy and very supportive of me at any weight. He is thin with a giant sweet tooth, but he keeps all his goodies in his office at my request. We have been traveling a lot so it's been a struggle just to maintain. After we visit his parents for Christmas, we'll be home for a while and I'll go back to being a loser! Jen
You're welcome! Being a good responsible parent will give your daughter a definite heads up in this game of life. A lot of kids aren't blessed with parents that do that. I was watching TV last night, and they were reported that over half of all Ohio's 3rd graders can't read. That kind of scares me. I don't have kids, but when I do I am going to teach them everything I can to help them get ahead. That goes for diet, too. raising kids on junk food and TV is no way to go. It is a great idea to focus on making it through the holidays without gaining weight, so not a bad idea to put it on hold for the next couple of weeks. I think that when you set sky high goals for this time of the year, you may run into some disappointments.. As any other time of the year, portion control is your first line of defense! And the first of the year will be here soon enough to make some "resolutions" (whatever they may be :) ) I love to travel! I haven't been to many places, but when I do go places I always have a good time!
Where have your travels taken you? and do you have any additional tips on dieting when eating out 3 meals/day? It seems like when I am traveling I always get a lot more exercise, so I don't usually gain as much as you'd think. In November I was traveling domestically. My husband's conference was in Las Vegas so I had some fun there. Then we went to California to visit some old friends and it turns out they took us to their condo on Lake Tahoe, which was beautiful. Then we were at home in Chicago for a week and then off to the other coast to my parents house in South Carolina. Finally to my husbands parents for Thanksgiving. They live in a small town downstate in Illinios. It's our home state but their farm land seems worlds away from where we live - in the city. Back to some healthy ideas when traveling... Sometimes, I bring packages of oatmeal to eat in the room for breakfast and buy some fruit that is easy to carry in my bag after I get to where I'm going. I have been a Type I diabetic for 30 years and am just used to always carrying food with me in case I needed it. Now that I wear an insulin pump, the food isn't necessary but always convient for hungry toddlers! Jen
one thing that comes in handy is, and i know this is going to sound crazy, but bottled baby food by gerber. i normally only get the fruit kinds. bananas are my favorite. but for a nutritional snack that carries well this might be an alternative that provides nutrients and doesn't run the risk of spoiling etc. raisins and nuts are a couple other foods that carry well
I, too, am 5 ft. 7, and my current weight is about where you are now. Back in October I weighed 202, when I started my diet. I am SO looking forward to weighing what you do now......I was skinny all my life, until I had to have a hysterectomy in 1994 and then quit smoking as well. I usually weighed about 130 lbs. and felt very comfortable in my skin. So, I'm keeping my fingers that I make it to that weight...someday! My current goal is to weigh 170 by New Years Day.
