i have always heard that you should eat only what you want. So i have lowered my diet to about 1 meal a day and water all day. Am i going to lose weight this way or not?

yeah you will definitely lose weight. that is exactly the plan i've been using. i have one normal dinner and skip breakfast and lunch. after about a week your appetite goes down and the meal is adequate. the weight loss has been pretty dramatic.

my advice would be to follow what your body dictates. if you are hungry, have something healthy to eat. a piece of fruit or some carrot sticks never hurt anyone! drinking more water will help, too. drink as much as you can! nice to meet you :)

People usually underestimate the value of LOTS of water in their diet :) Soda is no substitute...

While I'm not a fan of one meal a day diets (often *some* food for breakfast will jump start your metabolism causing you to burn MORE calories, thus losing more weight - that's right, you lose more by eating more!), ultra-low calorie diets can be a way of getting your weight loss regime in motion. You will see near immediate results, which may motivate you to continue. The goal, though, is to ultimately switch to a more "normal" diet/work-out regime. Do the ultra-low calorie plan for a few weeks (or as long as you can tolerate it - I know I usually need to eat more than once a day). Then slowly work your way to a proper diet. You want a plan that you can live with for the rest of your life. Do you see yourself eating one meal a day for the rest of your life? If so, keep going! But most of us aren't that way. What you want to do is to learn how to keep your caloric intake to a reasonable level (1500-3000 calories/day, depending on your size, weight, exercise-program, etc.) AND with *healthy* foods. You don't want those calories coming from Big Macs, cakes, sodas and/or pizzas. You want things like salads (with lots of green leafy vegetables) with some albacore tuna (for the omega-3 fats) and fat-free Italian dressing. That provides you with low calories, but lots of protein, anti-oxidants, essential vitamins and overall good healthy food. Eating a big salad vs. a fatty, carboydrate rich fast food item makes a difference in how full you feel too. In other words, live like the thin, healthy you now - or as soon as possible. Would the thin, healthy you only eat once a day? Probably not - you'd need more calories because the thin, healthy you has a lot of muscle that needs to be maintained. Would the thin, healthy you have a piece of chocolate now and then? Sure - but the thin, healthy you would NOT eat the whole bag of chocolates! :) And the thin, healthy you would definitely exercise (with weights as well). So be sure to incorporate exercise into your life. Therefore, it's fine to get your diet going with this low caloric intake plan, but be cognizant that this is just a way to get things going - your ultimate goal is to make a change in how you eat, live and think. Good luck! :D

Simply said, if you drop your calories too low, as with eating one meal per day, you will lose weight........you will lose a lot of it in muscle loss. Muscle burns calories. Losing muscle means a decrease in metabolism, which will cause you to stall AND YOUR BODY WILL STORE MORE FAT. Bad idea! I suggest finding out your BMR (basal metabolic rate) and working from there.

good call on the one meal a day. if you are hungry, be sure to eat. just be careful on what you eat. a bag of doritos will sink any diet plan for sure.

You wan't be careful not to kick your body into starvation mode.

I had to jump in here. You really have to be careful in eating 1 meal a day. I was on a diet once upon a time. Through a crazy "diet company". I was on 700 calories a day. I was monitored 4 times a week. I lost 55 lbs in less than 3 months, but at the same time my hair started falling out, my skin was losing it's color, I was feeling like I was going to pass out everytime I stood up. It's not healthy to starve your body. I was eating most of my calories in 2 meals. When I finally went to see my doctor he told me the only good thing I was doing was making the casket lighter for my family to carry. Scared me on the spot. The thing about the diet I was on was they were not teaching me how to eat for the rest of my life. It was only a quick fix. Thats not what we're after. We have to eat healthy and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Listen to your body, ask your doctor for advice. Don't end up like I did. EllieFunt

touching advice.

Low Calorie diets are bad! You get hungry then you eat whatever's closest and you are moody etc. Bad diet! Bad!

Dosen't slimfast say eat one meal a day and drink shakes for breakfest and lunch ? :?

Try it. You WILL be hungry. Plus, no matter what they say, you do not get proper nutrition when you drink slimfast even though it has all these added nutrients. You still need them from a more natural source.

I have never really tried the one meal a day thing, i just dont know if i could, i like to eat to much unfortunantally. with me i think maybe its mostly in the mind, i have to motivate myself to exercise more, and eat less junk. because i keep waiting for all these "new diets" that are comign out to give me the answer i need and none of them are working. my problem is will power. I tried the slimfast diet, and call me crazy but it didn't seem to work for me. althought i didn't practice using a scale, i always judged my weight by how i thought i looked and if my jeans were getting to tight. i never wanted to LOOK "overweight" or "chubby" I also tried metabolife pills. i have to admitt, they REALLY helped keep my appitie undercontrol, sometimes i wouldnt be hungry ALL DAY... but it got me to jittery. besides i hate taking medicines or anythign that alters my bodys functions. it could have had something to do with the fact that i was also on the strict atkins diet at the same time and doing tae-bo religiously every day! that diet seemed to work, quick results, but as soon as i went off it, the weight trickled right back on. who knows, eventually we will all find the diet right for us.... :?

I drunk 108 oz. of water one night and it made me way more on the scale in the morning, it discourages me so i try to drink around 40 to 60 oz. of water a day, which I think is still a good bit of h20.

i'm on slimfast and people think that you just have the 2 drinks and the meal and that's it- but it's not. you are also supposed to be eating healthy snacks in between each meal. if you've ever read the slimfast cans they say to not depend on it for your nutrition and that you need to eat other things. going under 1200 calories isn't good for your body, it will slow your metabolism and when you try to eat normally again then you'll store more fat because your body will be getting ready for when you go into starvation mode again. i've lost 27 pounds s far. i've done this by eating healthier foods and cutting down my cal.s to 1200-1500 a day. also, exersizing eveyday. usually taebo and/or tennis. now i still have 16 more pounds or so to go but i'm now concentrating on having less then 200g carbs a day, and less then 2000mg of soduim, and eating at least 25g of fiber a day. i'm also trying to get some strength training in so i can build more lean muscle. but slimfast is a great plan, it was what taught me how to start counting calories and, even though i can stick to my plan with out it- it'a a great source of protien and fiber...
