that is what a new story has found. i mean it is pretty heavy on meat.

I saw this too, BigBoy, and was going to make a thread (you beat me to it). Here's the [b:d4e55ba3cf]link[/b:d4e55ba3cf] to the story. I think if people do an "Atkins Lite" version, they are fine. That is, sure avoid carbs, but don't bombard your body with that much fat. Also, continue to watch portion sizes. Atkins DOES stress portion control, but I have a feeling many eat until they are full - which may mean stuffed! There's a difference in eating until you have a "full feeling" and gorging! Eating slow is the key, as it takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to tell the brain it is full. Still, this is why I've decided to stick with my low-fat, mod-carbs, low-cal diet (to the best of my ability). I find I feel good on it (no pain that I saw when I was on a high-fat diet) and am losing weight.

I wondered about that, too. Everyone knows that Bacon/Sausage is packed with fat. (Of course you could replace that with a Turkey or Chicken bacon or sausage) It seems virtually impossible to be able to eat as much of these foods and lose weight. I know that last weekend I made some horrific brownies sold by Atkins, I think they were called Quick Quisine or something like that and both my husband had I were paying the price for that "indulgence" Next time we'll pass!

you have to wonder about this diet plan. i'm sure that there hasn't been enough studies or time to see whether or not this diet is safe and/ or effective. it seems like any diet that allows for very little or no carbs may be dangerous.

I think that any diet that excludes [i:7288259325]any[/i:7288259325] food group is dangerous.

that is probably true enough, lambchop. if humans weren't meant to eat carbohydrates, its funny that potatoes are a vegetable that are high in carbs, and they are "manufactured" from the earth.

the one thing i would be concerned with is: this diet has hit fad proportions and there are TONS of people on it. it is almost the de facto standard in dieting these days and a lot of mis-information surrounding it. i am pretty sure people who have the most success on atkins also are restricing calories as much as possible and doing exercise.

[b:ca8efac32e]I guess I could say I'm on a "modified" Atkins diet. Allthough I really haven't read up all that much on the original Atkins diet, I watch the carbs, fat grams, calories, and everything on every single lable. I do try to cut down on any and all "white" foods, such as rice, pasta, and bread. Granted, if I have been doing good and I reeeeeally want that slice of buttered garlic bread, I'll eat it. Period! I keep fresh deli meat in my fridge such as lean ham, turkey, and chicken. I'll eat about 1 oz. of the meat with a side salad - say, 1 cup fresh lettuce and veggies. I also drink around 8-10 bottles of water each day, esp. before meal time nears. I'm guessing I now eat about 1/3 of what a regular meal used to be for me...and my stomach can really tell the difference. I'm used to the smaller meals now, and get fuller quicker. Since I began, I've lost a total of 18 pounds and dropped from a size 18 to a 14. I do my exercising at night before going to bed....I sleep so much better! On a lighter note, I still have my 2 cans of Dr. Pepper every day....funny. I can quit smoking cold turkey, but still gotta have my soda pop! I'll be smoke free for 3 years this New Years Eve! :P [/b:ca8efac32e] [/color:ca8efac32e]

good work anndoodle. i quit smoking on july 4th 2001. i declared my independence from cigarettes on independence day :) i also agree with you that it is better to modify any diet to suit your own needs. to constantly deny a single slice of bread because of the "carbs" just seems like a bit much. just go with the flow and listen to your own body. it will tell you all you need to know in the long run.

I agree that the Atkins Diet could be dangerous. I tried it..... for about 8 weeks.... lost 24 lbs. but about the last 2 weeks..... I began to get really bad back pain over my kidneys.... and a real bad metalic taste in my mouth. It scared me so I quit and went back to eating normal which was not as much meat and adding carbs ..... once I did that after a week or so the back pain and metalic taste went away. marymoo

I read that Doctor Atkins had a BMI that classified him as being "obese" He also was said to have had heart disease. Does anyone know if he followed his own diet at all or did he just preach it?

I bet he followed it. Sounds like the heavy cream got the better of him.

last night the news refuted that! his doctors said he wasn't fat. he just ran into some problems after the fall. they showed some pictures of him and he didn't look obese.

Ya, I saw pictures of him about 2 weeks before his fall at some conference and he looked thin. Maybe he was obese at one time, maybe that is why he came up with this diet. But even the picture of him on his books he doesn't look overweight at all.

To Doctoru2, The link you posted shows "document not found"

Looks like articles expire at yahoo. Never knew that.

I saw a few more pictures of Atkins and he looked thin enough to me.

[quote:a02ac6b830="momma-dog"]To Doctoru2, The link you posted shows "document not found"[/quote:a02ac6b830] I posted that link in November, so by now I'm sure it has expired. But I think you can pick up the story from our posts here. :D
