8) well i figure... Low calorie diet as well as working out... should show me some results! but how many cals is too much or too little for health?? any tips on what you guys found works and stuff... Im all ears! thanks ~*melissa*~

How old are you? How much do you weight? How tall are you?

im 19... Im 5'7 1/2 and weigh 173lbs.... :)

To maintain your current weight requires 2030 calories a day. Anything less than that should result in weight loss. If you go to around 1500 calories you should see some decent weight loss.

I agree - women should eat between 1000-1500 calories a day to lose weight (in general). Try to NOT go below 1000 calories a day. Sometimes, even that amount is too low and you'll get headaches. Therefore, try eating several smaller meals throughout the day (an apple 10, a sandwich at noon some raisins at 3, etc.) to constantly have your body processing food. That will keep your blood-glucose levels strong. Also, even though you are low-cal, you have to eat well! Be sure to eat healthy foods, not just crackers and peanut butter, for example. Lean Cuisine and SmartOnes frozen food are a start. Healthy cereals, like Total are good. And, of course, lots of fruits and veggies. Good luck!

you can actually eat quite a bit of food to get to a 1,500 calorie total.

low calorie works for me , I am on a 1000 calorie diet . I shouldn't say diet because this will be my lifestyle for the rest of my life. :D

this is what i ahve been askin u all but nobody wnats to reply to me  anyways can soemone tell me how many cals i am allowed to i'm 24 5ft4'' 115lbs sheikha

to shyam17 You should be eating 2030 calories a day. With moderate exercise.

make sure the calories you eat are good ones too, that can get burned up and processed by the body. you need energy fuel.

big boy and momma dog.. thanks but 2030 cals a day seems loads i'm having about 13-1600 a day. hmm so i'm doing ok then? thank you guys ur so much help and fun :)

To shyam17 Looking up in my weight watchers book the minimum a 5’4” person should weigh is 116 lbs and average is 121 to 145. So it sounds as though you are under weight. Resents studies show that there is a link between being too thin and osteoporosis (bone thinning). So being 115 lbs and 5’4” inches you may want to speak to your doctor before starting a weight loss plan. Something doesn’t sound right to me. I'm sure a Doctor can help set up a good plan for you. Good luck to you.

Momma Dog.. I am not interested in loosing weight but i just want to loose some inche son my body areas.. and want to be on a sensible diet .. i dont want to gain weight ... i was a few lbs lighter about 6 month ago and thats all i really want .. but to be frank i dont mind not loosing weight as long as i cna spread a few inches. Dont worry about me i'm not tryin to be bone thin.. hoenst :?

Exercise, try weight lifting. It's great, I use to do it and I felt like a million bucks. Now I'm just too lazy. But it really gives you terrific results. Boy, it so easy to give advice I just wish I could take my own!!!

weight lifting? like free weight? i do the machine weights but never done free weight i dont wanna look buff u know? i just wanna look well tones.. i am not one of those gal's who likes to lok touch and masculine?

all you need is some exercise. plus if you eat a solid daily of whole foods i bet you could quickly turn flab into a leaner framer. if you don't have any real "weight" to lose it should be pretty easy for you.

Easy? dont say that its not as easy as u think ok.. i now i dont have lots fo weight to loose but after my daughter this tummy and hip flab aint shiftin i wish it was easy!!!!!!!!

Easy is never the right word! Everything takes effort.

Shyam 17: Boy can I relate. O.K., not completely - I mean, being a male I am unable to give birth. LOL! However, I fully understand the part about the belly flab and how difficult it is to be rid of it. I've sadly been stuck in some stagnant phase for these past few months. Admittedly, I'm not working out as much as I should. Winter has taken a toll. Various illnesses and the dark cold weather left me uninspired. However, I did get at least *some* exercise every week and I continued to eat ridiculously healthy. So I'm annoyed that at least some weight hasn't been lost. I guess it's time for me to do what I've recommended to so many others: start a journal. I plan on writing down every litting thing I eat and drink each day. I also plan on tracking my exercise. This way, even though I may think I'm eating well, perhaps I'll find I'm eating far too much food. Or I may realize that I'm exercising far less than I thought. The truth isn't easy to face - but I think this is the only way I'll break free from this "stagnant" phase I'm in and start losing again. Lots of people have stagnant phases. I just read a story about a man who is now in great shape - however, he started at over 300 pounds. He was stagnant at 280 pounds for 2 months! Finally, he broke free of it and dropped to 200. So I know we can all do this as well - we just have to persevere. My advice then is to do what I'm doing: keep a journal. Write down every little thing you eat and every exercise you do. After a few weeks, review. It might surprise you to see what you ate on a given day. Or you might see that if you added a certain exercise, you could lose that tummy flab faster. Good luck to you! And don't get discouraged! :D

I think that a lot of people can benifit from keeping a journal. I just went out and got me a small notebook so that i can keep track of what i am eating and how much i am excercising. I stalled at my current weight for a wile now. I will start tomorrow. Maybe by looking at the overall picture i can find something to help me start losing again. Kiara

Hi Doc.. Thanks alot for ur encouraging words, i am a bit upset today bcoz i started my diet but have not lost anythng i went on the diet on monday last week and weighed myself i was 8 stone 1 lb (uk weight sorry) and then on friday i weighed again .. couldnt help it i wieghed 8 stone on the dot so i wanst thrilled but i was happy i had lost a lb.. ANyway this morning i weighed myself and i weigh 8stones 2 lbs aaaaaaarrrrrgggh how can this be? ANyway as for a journal i ahve been keeping one every day since last monday too it helps for sure, but right now i am feeling if i ahvent lost anything and i know i still have the flab on my tum and hips and thighs then what is the point :( ! but i am not giving up just yet will stick wiht it, my goal is too loose a few inches 2 i think on my hips and waist and thogh but summer, i am going on a romantic weekend break wiht my husband for easter so i wnat to really loose some and this flab by then. Thanks again.

the scale is overrated. try to ignore the urge to get on the scale all the time. when you have less weight to lose, its tough to move the scale. but your clothes will start telling the tale in no time.

Shyam: As you've only been dieting for a few weeks, my advice right now is to ignore the scale completely for a while. 8O I know - it's tough to do. Here you are exercising and dieting and you want to see those pounds come off. And sometimes they do - but then you'll have that day where the scale goes back up and it's really depressing. And no one needs that - especially a person just starting their diet! A few weeks back, I was at my lowest weight in ages. Now, the scale is reading 5-10 pounds more. Did I really gain weight? Probably not. But I probably didn't really lose it either. I think I weighed myself at a great time when I reached that low weight - when I hadn't eaten in a while and was benefitting from some recent exercise. When I weighed myself recently it was after I had eaten and not exercised for a few days. As a result, I appeared to weigh more (or maybe I did even gain a few pounds). To ignore the high weight, though, I also have to ignore the low weight. In essence, I haven't changed at all these past few months. Just like that story I told above about that 320 pound man who stagnated for 2 months at 280 pounds, I'm stagnant around 250. :x In my case, I just need to push harder. So these past few days, I've been resuming my prior exercise regime and eating less. Perhaps in a week or two, if I keep up this pace, some results will show. In your case, as you just started dieting, give your body some time to adjust. Weigh yourself again in 2 weeks. In the interim, watch your food intake, drink lots of water and get some exercise at least 3x a week for 20 minutes or more. I bet in 2 more weeks, you'll see a difference. Lastly, remember, you won't lose weight quickly. Healthy weight loss, sadly, is a slow process. Gimmick diets may lose weight fast, but they are often unhealthy and you'll gain the weight back - and more! - as soon as you stop dieting. Stick with the healthy diet/exercise program. It may take longer to shed those pounds, but once you do, you won't gain them back! Good luck to you - and don't be discouraged. Most of us can relate! :D

thanx Doc ur words are so encouraging i willl try to avoid the scale, i am unfortunately unable to go to the gym only twice since i have to fit in childcare and study. anyway thank u sheikha p.s good luck to u to

Building muscle does not automatically mean you are going to look tough and bulky. People that look like that work HARD everyday, it's like a job in itself. And women can't build bulky muscle without help from some type of steriod supplement, so don't be scared. Look at Madonna or Britney Spears, not GREAT role models, but they lift weights and they, by no means, look tough and bulky. Building muscle increases your metabolism because muscle burns calories, fat doesn't. Instead of worrying about how much you weigh, do some weight training and look at how your body looks, not weight. When I do resistance exercises, I always notice that my body looks toner immediately afterward. That is why I always do a few push ups and crunches when I go to the club wearing a belly baring top! Regardless of my blabber, the point isthat you will not look bulky if you do strength exercises, you would have to Spend ALL DAY at the gym for MANY months to look that way!
