Hi Ruthie, Your plan should work quite well. At 900 calories every day, you will be running a calorie deficit and will undoubtedly experience weight loss. The meal replacement low calorie diets, while not easy, have worked for tons of people. It's just a matter of staying disciplined and focused on your goals.
Of course a 900 calorie a day will help you lose weight. Better yet, go 600 calories a day. Or 300. The only problem is, that just isn't enough food. If you have been overeating and gaining weight it just won't be that easy to go down to some miniscule portion of food. That's the fatal flaw in your plan.
 ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS IM WITH YOU , I SUPPORT YOUR DIET PLAN AND IM GOING TO TRY 900 CALORIES ADAY.!GOOD LUCK AND BES WISHES[/quote]
I kinda agree with Henrietta. You should first take a look at how many calories you're currently eating and then decide on a sensible amount to decrease by. If you start at 900, you'll hit a plateau (which we all do) and then you'll have no wiggle room to decrease your caloric intake and still be healthy. And if you'll be working out 5 times/week, like I read in your other post, most of the 900 will be burned during that time; which has the potential to make you light-headed while working out. Something to think about.
I agree with Henrietta and Jozie. There's nothing wrong with eating 900-1000 calories a day - just not right away. Start with about 1200-1300 calories a day for 2 weeks. Chances are, you have been eating a lot more than that for a while now. If, for example, your normal caloric intake was ~2500 calories a day, you'll see how difficult it is to suddenly cut that number in half. Still, this is a good launching point. Eat lots of vegetables, leans meats and fruit. Then, exercise initially about 3x a week for around 20-30 minutes. Don't push yourself too hard too fast. With your low caloric intake and a good work-out, you'll notice the weight coming off right away. After 2-3 weeks, increase your work-outs a bit. You can do an extra day, or you can keep going 3x a week, but just increase the exercises (the amount you do) or the time you do them. For example, walk further, lift more weights, do aerobics for a bit longer. Correspondingly, try to drop your caloric intake to around 1100 calories a day. Then, after another 2-3 weeks, up the ante again. Once again make your work-outs longer or more challenging. Working-out 3x a week is fine because that gives your body plenty of time to recover. Chances are your body isn't used to lifting weights or walking or doing strenuous aerobics. It's great to have this ambition of working-out 5x a week, but if your body isn't used to it, it'll be a real challenge for you to do. As a result, you'll view working-out as a chore, rather than as part of your lifestyle. You won't look forward to working-out, and, you'll end up quitting. So take it slow for the first 6 weeks. Also, drop your calories again to 1000/day (or, if you insist, 900/day). Be sure to drink LOTS of cold water throughout this entire time. It'll help your skin, fill you up, help burn calories and help burn fat. Plus, as you are working-out, it'll help replenish fluids. Diet, caffeine-free drinks are also acceptable. What I described above is the basic BowFlex 6-week challenge - and it's a good one. If you start now, by Thanksgiving, you'll have lost as much as 20 pounds of fat! If you work-out (especialy with weights), you might gain a few pounds of muscle (which is what you want to happen, so don't be discouraged by the word "gain") for a total weight loss of 16-18 pounds. But you'll see a leaner, more tone you. After the 6 weeks are up, start all over again. Keep your work-outs at the same level, but you can increase your calories back up to 1200-1300 a day and work your way down again. By Christmas, you might be able to drop another 15 or so pounds! How do I know? Because this is the program I'm doing and it's working! Good luck!
definitely good advice from the doc. work your way up to a severe diet. get more hardcore as time goes on. trying too much too soon is a definite problem.
agreed. going down to 900 calories right away is not smart. your body will go into starvation mode and your metabolism will slow way down and your body will store (versus burn) fat. try for a more reasonable 1200, especially with your amount of exercise. good luck. another consideration: you will crave stuff at only 900 calories per day and then you will be more likely to binge.
So Ruthy, how's it going? Is that 900 calories per day working out for you?

Ruthy had enough of that 900 a day and went out for a Double Whopper!
[quote:adf868c660]Ruthy had enough of that 900 a day and went out for [/quote:adf868c660] the count.. doesn't look like the 900 calorie a day diet works after all.. ; :( **edited for redundancies**
Oh it can work. Just like the Cabbage Soup Diet works. Up until about day 6 or so and you say "Am I Nuts? I Can't live on soup alone!" and you abandon the whole plan. We hear many proclamations here, but how long do they last?
Hi Ruthie~ I have been on a 900 Calorie diet since last Wed, 12/17. I have lost 6-1/2 lbs. so far. I eat 3 meals a day plus a snack at 4p. Also, I am drinking 8-8 oz glasses of water per day. This helps fill you up as well as flush out your system. Obviously for health reasons I don't advocate this for everyone and certainly not for a long period but it has given me a badly needed boost especially with the impending holidays. [u:3c037af410]Today's menu:[/u:3c037af410] Breakfast: 1/2 cup low fat plain yogurt, 1/2 cup berries, fresh (raspberries & blackberries, 1 tsp honey and 2 tsp walnuts, 1 cup coffee w/non-dairy creamer. (195 cal.) 16 oz water Lunch: 2 whole wheat pitas, 1-1-2 oz shredded part-skim mozzarella, 2-2-1/2" diameter tomatoes, sliced, 1 tsp olive oil, oregano, garlic salt. 8 0z skim milk. (392 cal.) 16 oz water Snack: 1/4 C low fat cottage cheese, 10 red seedless grapes, hot tea with 1 tsp sugar, 1 T 1% Milk. (105 cal.) 16 oz water Dinner: 4 oz Chicken-broiled or "fried" in Pam spray, 1/2 Cup asparagus, 1/4 C white rice. (225 cal.) 16 oz water I need food and variety to stay on ANY plan. I've had many battles with weight and tried so many diets. I am currently at 189 and my goal is 157. I'm 5'5".
Thats great ! Thank you :D
I plan to start a 900 calorie a day diet on Monday 6/7/04. The way I see is this will be 3 300 calorie meals a day. Lean Cuisines and Lean Pockets have fewer calories then that. I’m the kind of person who can’t be left to eat healthy snacks through out the day because I will over do it. Here’s a little background for you. I am 5’7” and 150 pounds and about a size 10. I would like to get down to an 8. I would like to see some good results by July 4th. I am almost 28 years old with a 7 year old daughter. I work full time, go to school part time, and have a husband who works at night and sleeps in the evenings when I am home. This leaves me little time for exercise. Now that school is out for the summer my evenings are a little freer for some sort of activity. I also plan to walk during my brakes at work since I will not be using that time to study. I’ll keep you posted.
Heya, my name is Crystal, I'm 16 and...sadly 225 pounds. I really hate my body, and can't believe I let myself get this way... Well I've been on a 900 Calorie diet for over a week now (started at 235) and lost 10-11 pounds so far. I usually tend to keep it at 600 somethin..but recently i keep eating just under 900. My mom is being supportive and that helps a lot, so far I've kept to my word that I won't eat fast food, greasy foods, and fried foods. I don't eat junk foon anymore either, and drink lots of water, but probably not as much as I should. I did walk everynight a mile to 2 miles a night...but I'm in Idaho and it's so cold and the road's and sidewalks are so iced over that it's now hard to do. Well tonight I was just messin around and decided to search "900 Calories a Day" and I found this link, and was glad to see that I'm not the only one on it. I hope you guys won't mind a 16 year old chatting with you :)
:D
thanks for the plan, they always help me come up with new ideas for my own diet.
