i decided to try on my sis's old prom dresses....and they fit me pretty much perfectly...but she's a size ten..i wear a 2/4/6 what is that..she is way bigger than me (not fat but just proportionally bigger) so how did i fit into these dresses so well..shouldnt they have been really big? :?:

Sizes *are* crazy! When I got married, I tried on dresses anywhere from a size 16 to a 28! Some designers make formal dresses bigger and some make them smaller. It just depends. When I was in college, I took a costume history class. One day we were talking and my prof. said that the fashion industry changes what a size is every 10 years to make people think they are thinner. (So a person who would normally wear a size 12 now wears a size 10.) It's a marketing ploy. They want you to buy their clothes. Unfortunately, that's how I have always judged myself.

Here's something that I read from another site. Sizes are stupid - (those are my words not theirs  ) Take some time to really look at the makers of the clothes that have the larger size numbers on them and you'll find that they're probably generic clothes - the more expensive the make of the clothes and the more "important" the designer the smaller the size becomes. I guarantee that on the main shopping lines in NY City you'd be the tiniest size in the shop, while at Kmart or Walmart (again depending on the designer) you might go up in size. The numbers really mean nothing unless you plan on sticking with one brand only. There are no rules which stipulate the measurements of any given size. Designers just make an outfit and pick a number to slap on the back of it. Another example; I watched one episode of that reality tv show with Anna Nicole (or whatever her name is) and she happened to be trying on clothes. Now she was shopping in fancy stores and they called her a 10 - me? I'm sitting at home in my 12 thinking - there is NO WAY that she's smaller than me. Give me a break! Take heart and don't pay attention to labels and numbers on outfits, pay attention to the mirror (although even that can lie sometimes), to the way you FEEL(mentally and physically), and to the clothes you've had for quite a while. [u:8d4097d3db][i:8d4097d3db][b:8d4097d3db][size=18:8d4097d3db]NUMBERS LIE![/size:8d4097d3db][/b:8d4097d3db][/i:8d4097d3db][/u:8d4097d3db]

I don't know a lot about women's sizes, but I do know that Anna Nicole is as much a size 10 as I have abs like Brad Pitt!

   Thank you for that [b:b1b962eff6]doctoru2[/b:b1b962eff6] :!: I was in desperate need of the laugh you just provided!

[quote:a919f43435]Anna Nicole is as much a size 10 as I have abs like Brad Pitt! [/quote:a919f43435] haha! I almost feel sorry for Anna Nicole, she was on foxnews some time ago and was totally out of her head. Maybe even drunk or under the influence of other drugs. As for the size thing, it really does depend on the maker. I think that clothes that were made in the glory days of my youth did run smaller, though.

they (clothes manufacturers) are all over the place with sizes. my prediction is as people get "bigger" they will make the clothes bigger but keep the sizes the same. no use insulting your customers.

I think that [b:d522cc17d3]Anna Nicole Smith [/b:d522cc17d3]is what you would call a [b:d522cc17d3]success [/b:d522cc17d3]story! Unless The Star's Cover picture is a fabrication, she has lost 80 pounds and looks fabulous!! :D

Unless The Star's Cover picture is a fabrication, she has lost 80 pounds and looks fabulous!! :D[/quote:99079a2d78] I just saw this too - in the tabloids when I was shopping. The Anna Nicole Smith all of us discussed above was the very heavy one with her own show (no way was she a size 10 then). If this "new" Smith is indeed 80 pounds lighter - great for her. However, I'll only consider this a success if she keeps the weight off. We could all drop 80 pounds if we were as wealthy as she is and had our own trainers and cooks - not to mention the time to work-out any time we wanted.

True enough. Keeping the weight off once you lost it all is also a priority. If you fall back to your old unhealthy ways, it is normally only a matter of time before you start gaining back the weight. I would imagine that being iin the spotlight is both a blessing and a curse. I have always thought that she has beautiful face, features that remind me of Marilyn Monroe. I'm sure that knowing everyone in America and the world probably is making fun of you would not be a good feeling at all. Hell, it isn't fun if you are an average nobody being laughed at. I can only imagine what it would be like to be all over TV, on DVD..

Fame can be a curse - but the reason it's bad for Smith is of her own doing. One only needs to watch her show (is it still on TV?) and hear her speak to realize she's not exactly the brightest bulb. That, in and of itself, is fine. But couple this with the fact that she really came across as a money-grubber by marrying a very wealthy man many decades her senior shortly before he died causes a lot of eyebrows to be raised. Compare her to someone like Bono, the lead singer of the group U2. U2 has enjoyed success for 3 decades now, winning 14 Grammies, a Golden Globe and has sold over 100 million albums worldwide. In an era of free downloading, U2's last studio album still sold over 4 million copies in the U.S., making them one of the bigger sellers recently, up with the likes of Eminem and Shania Twain. Bono could have sat back on this fame and lived a rock star lifestyle. Yet, he married his high school sweetheart and has been married to her for over 20 years now! They have 4 children together. While this cannot be 100% confirmed, there have never been any reports of infidelity on his part. More importantly, Bono has used his fame to support a number of critical issues, including Green Peace, Amnesty International and now, DATA - the debt and AIDS relief program for Africa. For this work, he was even nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize (and in my opinion, deserved it). Yet Bono only graduate high school and never went to college, as U2's career started around the same time. Not bad for "just a high school graduate" to be hobnobbing with some of the most powerful people in the world - along with being one of the biggest rock stars in the world! My point is that fame is what you make of it. In Smith's case, she's exploited herself to make more $$. Bono, while certainly making very wealthy, made good use of his fame to better the world. Hence Bono is respected (even if some find him annoying). I will say this - Smith, when thinner, does have a very pretty face. She has potential - and I hope she finds it. I just hope she doesn't write some weight loss book, like Oprah, telling the world how she lost 80 pounds, only to see her gain it back in a year (again, like Oprah).

:) I never said she was the sharpest tool in the shed! hehe She is sort of an idiot. Sans her face I think she would be no great shakes. Any person that has been blessed with money and fame should try to do more for worthy causes. I was impressed with P-Diddy running a marathon to raise money for New Yorks Public Schools. It was a challenge that he rose to, I wish that he was able to raise more for this. 2 million seems to be a drop in the bucket, especially when Michael Bloomberg is this city's mayor....
