I can fully relate to your desire NOT to exercise. I have an exercise bike that I used to use in the mid-90's, but haven't touched in ages. However, I'm now reaching the point where it might get some use again. :) What motivated me to finally exercise was getting a BowFlex. I know this isn't in everyone's budget, but the high cost is partially what's keeping me going. I didn't want to spend all that $$ on an expensive clothes rack. ;) Also, I knew the BowFlex would allow me to not only lose weight, but ultimately build muscle and get something that resembles they type of built I've always wanted. So that is keeping me going. You just have to find something that will motivate you to start. Perhaps a new piece of exercise equipment will do it (as the BowFlex did for me). Perhaps planning a nice vacation will do it. Perhaps a special family event or reunion. Perhaps a new outfit. Just find some sort of goal that will get you going. One thing about exercise - once you REALLY start on a program, you may find yourself sticking to it. You'll feel guilty on the days you have to miss working-out, so you make sure you schedule them back in again. Diet and exercise is a life change. Once you get in the habit of work-out, you'll forget what it was like to NOT work-out. Good luck!
Hi Starryeyed. This is something I think a lot of us are confronted with. Maybe you should just make a commitment to getting healthier for right now. Do you have any friends that also need to lose a little weight? Maybe you could be workout buddies..
Starry-Eyed, Wow, you're being a bit tough on yourself this morning. It sounds like I am just about the same size as you ... 20/22 ish. Yet I bet if you met me you wouldn't say I was disgusting and lazy, now would you? And you're getting up and out the door to work everyday so that doesn't sound like laziness either. I started on the weight watchers program on 8/18 and have lost 11 pounds so far. Since starting, each day that I am at work I got out and walk and lunchtime. When I started it was tough to do a half hour. Now it is more common for me to walk 50 to 60 minutes. I've just made it part of my routine ... with no excuses about weather or tiredness or anything. it's just something i do now. i walk at lunchtime. perhaps that would be a good way for you to get started too? we can be long distance exercise buddies! :) I have discovered that I am really enjoying getting out of the building and getting some exercise. My work environment is extremely stressful right now and the exercise is helping me to deal with that. There is a cemetery nearby and I have taken to walking there, and today even saw 7 deer there. It's a peaceful and quiet time, and gives me time to think about things. Anyway, whether you find your motivation today, or if it takes awhile longer, please be kind to yourself. being overweight is not a character flaw. but working to lose excess weight is an admirable pursuit and something to be proud of. best wishes to you. - joan
Being overweight is definatly not a character flaw- there's more of us to love! :D I completely understand how you feel and what you are going through. Dieting has to be one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. I love the idea of a long-distance walking buddy- that may be the answer to give you motivation! Wieght Watchers has a wonderful support system; perhaps a group setting would boost that motivation more. Hang in there and lean on us for support!
