I personally don't like low carb diets. They make me feel worn out and irritable, but I am also hypoglycemic, so I have to have my fruit. But your body actually needs both carbs and fat to function properly. Anyway, I reccomend sticking with the tried and true 5 or 6 small meals a day following the food pyrimid. If you do tend to overeat carbs (like me, love my noodles and mashed potatoes) then try to cut back by buying whole grain breads and noodles and all that other happy stuff. Lay off the sweets and snack on things like frozen blueberries (yum) or pretzels that you have already divided up into correct servings. Another thing you could try is eat an apple and drink a glass of water before every meal. Its should curb your appetite. I got all this info from my health freak father (lol) and I hope it helps. He lost over 100 lbs. by eating right and exercising (while quitting smoking!) and he's kept it off for almost 10 years! He is an inspiration to me and I hope to you and anyone else who reads this. Okay, I know this is a little more than you asked for, but hope it helps anyway! P.S. He is now a marathon runner! (his third 26.2 coming up this winter!) ~~~~~Geo
The "low carb diet" has been outlined in a number of books over the years. They have slight variations, but they follow the same basic premise, which is: Americans are getting fatter as they eat more and more low fat foods. The argument they use is that Carbs have become the primary food a lot of people eat and that low fat foods are generally high in Carbs. I myself got into using the diet because I filled out a questionairre in a book called "Carbohydrate Addicts" and I scored almost perfect. The low carb diets call for you to eat less carbs, more protein and more FAT. So, on this diet, you will see calls for food like "heavy cream", bacon, sausage, and other foods you wouldn't normally think of as diet food. Geo is right when she says the diet isn't for everyone. I managed to lose weight using the diet, but my one friend had much faster results. Different bodies will respond differently.
That is great news about your dad.. You have his genetics, so there is no reason you can't do the same exact thing!!!
