Yes I read it. It really is a disgrace that these poor kids are confronted with so many health issues at a young age. Parents need to work extra hard to ensure their children grow up healthy.
the parents are the ones stocking the crappy food. kids don't buy groceries, so you have to blame the parents.
Yes. I have read it. The good thing about this article is taht they feature about half a dozen communities that are forming programs to help the kids. One latino community has started a program that meets everyday to do exercises of various sorts, because they live in a cash strapped school distict that hasn't offered a PE class to students in a couple of years.
No gym class?? I couldn't fathom being in school and not having a PE class.. are you sure you read that right?
It's always the programs like after school sports that get cut.
[quote:5fd15bb471="Henrietta"]It's always the programs like after school sports that get cut.[/quote:5fd15bb471] True... those even get cut at the college level. But PE is usually part of the in-school (not after school) program. I had PE every day during all 4 years of high school! We had to take it - we had no choice. I'd be surprised if things like that were no longer part of any program. If so, it's little wonder kids are getting heavier...
At my DD#1 and DD#2's school they only get PE 1 day a week for 30 minutes! They go to after care and depending on what they decide to do and how hot it is they either do crafts or sports. I try to get my oldest daughter out to do the sports stuff as she is a bit bigger than most of the kids in her class. Not fat though just bigger!
That is a shame. Even with all of the State lead lotteries that are supposed to be running in order to help the schools, it isn't enough? How are kids to learn to compete with other children if it isn't taught, or even offered in our school system?
This is going to end up being one of the biggest problems in the future. Money should be invested in the future (which is children).
They need to spend more time teaching kids the issues that they will really be dealing with as adults. Maybe PE classes should not only teach sports but add weight control and other health issues.
Here in BC, physical education, at one point, was not manditory. We had some huge edcuation budget cuts and yet, the provincial government pushed the PE program through to make it manditory up to grade 12. For the first time ever, childhood obesity is at epidemic proportions here. Not only is it a lack of undo care and attention in regards to diet, but video and computer games are a culprit as well. We live in a world of convienence and with that luxury comes consequences. Chef Boyarde- that's not a proper meal for a child! And yet, I bet every parent out there has at least one can of it in their cupboard. (At one point, I did!) I learned to make my child's dinners ahead of time, so as not to sabotage his health. (I may be fat but I sure as hell wasn't going to allow it to happen to him! ) There are wonderful, healthy reciepes on the internet for homemade pasta sauces, soups and chilie. Make huges batches every week, freeze it and pull it out when it's needed. Reach for the freezer rather than the cupboard, people! Your kids will love you for it later!
Very good point, Anathea, If the parent is overweight is no reason that the child should be. No reason to stock a lot of bad food, etc. and get the poor kid into bad habits that will last a lifetime. They will definitely thank you later.
