Maybe I'm going on a limb here, but I really feel I need to shatter some myths about the Atkins Diet. Although I am not a doctor, nor am I an expert on dieting, I am a participant of this program and I thought I would share my experience. Let me set the record straight- I do not eat steak and eggs for breakfast. In fact, I don't eat bacon for breakfast, either. I don't eat red meat or pork at all. My breakfast sometimes consists of a tasty omelett or sometimes it's a bowl of miso soup. (yes, I eat tofu on the Atkins diet!) I have to be honest, I eat more vegetables in a day on the Atkins diet than I did when I was a stricy vegan. (oh, did I mention I'm a reformed vegetarian?) During the first 2 weeks of the program, you're carb intake is very restricted but you have a large variety of vegetables to choose from to eat. I eat broccoli, avocados, tomatoes, kale, sprouts, mushrooms, olives, tofu and the list goes on. Do you know that 2 cups of romaine lettuce only has 1.4 net carbs? That's a lot of lettuce! As far as health concerns go, every diet has risks. Kidney stones are generally the signal of an underlying condition. (usually gout) It sometimes can be brought out during a diet but it's not generally because of the diet itself. Gallbladder attacks and gallstones are much more common amoung people loosing weight on any program- not just Atkins. Unfortunately, it's one of those unspoken consequences for some people, especially middle-aged women, after loosing a large amount of weight. Thus, the importance of visiting your physician before you start ANY diet program. I encourage everyone to visit the Atkins website for more information. It's very informative and dispells many of the myths that are out there. There are great recipes for everyone to enjoy! (even vegetarians!) www.atkins.com Thanks for letting me vent.

i actually tried the Atkins diet for about 3 months. i didn't like it, didn't have good results and plan on steering clear of it. at first read, it seems to make some sense and i know a few people who lost weight on it. however, it doesn't feel right to me, intuitively. i feel HEAVY eating that much protein. i am trying to go with more of a calorie restriction diet now, along with exercise to see if i have better results.
