i was going to go on a low carb diet but after reading some of the recipies that call for heavy cream and other fatting foods i would rather just go on a simple well balenced low fat diet it seems it would be better for your health in the long run

that's how a lot of people look at it.

You have to do what works for you. Good luck.

Try to think about the positives of a low carb diet. To whit: you can eat sausage and steak in copious amounts. Now quit crying and get to work! :)

Whatever you decide should work out fine. Trust your instincts.

i am working on it Big Al and i wasn't crying i was just wondering what if anyone else had the same thoughts as i do. i mean i have other worries than being over weight high colesterol and other problems run in my family and the low carb diet wich is high in fat just doesnt seem like it would be worth the rest of the health risks just so i can eat sausage :!:

I hear a lot of people having problems with this. I think you should try thre zone or better yet the book 40-30-30 fat burning nutrtion it has a balanced proportion of 40% carbs, 30 fat which comes from olive oil and lowfat dressings and 30 protein, please check it out and let me know what you think TAke Care and hope I was helpful, nabiab  :o

Hi Fluffy, I was just goofing around with crying comment. You actually have a lot of the same concerns as many people. With so many people on low carb diets these days (hitting fad levels), no one is completely sure of all of the long term risks. If you have a family history of certain issues, you definetly need to be concerned with the risks.

its ok bigal i get a little over sensitive sometimes

Myself personally, I have steered clear of heavy creams, butter and red meat on the Atkins diet and I still seem to be losing weight! (Because I am lactose intolerant, illiminating dairy was essential.) As an alternative, the Atkins Diet encourages the consumtion of soy. Perhaps use soya milk or soy alternatives? My primary sorces of protein have come from chicken and fish. I have the benefit of living on the West Coast and so my diet is full of salmon. The Atkins website has some wonderful reciepes. Check it out! www.atkins.com Good luck!

The South Beach Diet is being used by most of my office. Since everyone is concerned about the fat in some of the recipes we all modify them. Like instead of bacon & eggs it's egg beaters & turkey bacon. You can make easy changes to almost all of the recipes and they taste just fine.

I did the same thing when I lost weight on Atkins. I went a step further and tried to reduce fat, portion size, and calories as much as possible. It seems like the stricter you are with yourself on Atkins, the better the results.

Using "portion control" is the stalwart of almost every diet. Eat until you're full, not stuffed. Take your time eating, etc. All of these basic lessons apply no matter what the approach to a diet.

I think the best thing to do is talk to your doctor if you are concerned about going on a diet with high fat. A while ago, I asked my doctor and she was ready to put me on Atkins until she realized my gall bladder is on it's last leg and gall bladder disease runs in my family. Then she said it was a no-go. She also made me promise that if I ever tried the Atkins diet, I WOULD NOT give up vegetables because they are so important to our diet.

[size=18:0a0545bfd2][/size:0a0545bfd2] i have been on atkins for almost 5 weeks now. i've lost 20lbs and feel great. i no longer have migraines and sleep much better. i don't feel tired and sluggish either. my dr had told me to try it last spring to lower my cholesterol. he has been on it for several years, saying that his cholesterol and triglyceride levels have never been better. i tend to eat leaner meats like chicken and turkey breasts, but sometimes have bacon, turkey bacon, or pepperoni. i enjoy 3 to 4 cups of salad a day also. a lot of people think that you cannot have veggies while on atkins. that is just not true. as you move up in carbs you increase your veggie intake. he lists the ones that you can have in induction. again, as you increase your carb level intake, the more variety you have. the same is true of fruits. he strongly recommends getting your carbs through veggies and fruits as you increase, especially in the lifetime maintenance level. when you do start introducing breads and such, he recommends whole wheat and soy. for me, this is a lifestyle change. i don't crave the bread and stuff. i feel better than i have in years. good luck to y'all no matter which plan you choose!

way to go blue! glad to hear you're having success!!

thanks bigboy. as it turns out, my twin and little sister are on atkins too. between the three of us, we are trying to lose 300 lbs. so far, we have lost 111. we are definitely gonna get it all off this time. the three of us will have lost two people when all is said and done.

great work so far. 111 pounds is a whole nother person you aren't carrying around.

You and your sisters are doing great! How long have you been on the diet?

thanks, y'all. i've been on atkins for 5 weeks, my twin 14 weeks, and my little sister about 12 weeks, i think. my husband had lost 25, in the spring when my dr told me to try it. although getting off of it in may and not getting back on it until a couple of weeks ago, he did not gain any back. he ate whatever he wanted. this time around, he has lost 9 lbs. he is only 13 lbs away from his goal of being 145 lbs, which is my goal weight too. i just have further to go than he does. once again, congrats to those who are progressing and good luck to all of us, no matter which plan we follow!

nice job blue. it makes it a lot easier if you have a "team" attitude. keep up the great job! :D

thanks. it does make it easier like this. it would be even easier if we lived near each other. twin is on east coast, lil sis is in deep south, and i am out of the country. email and im helps a lot.

the internet is a good way to keep in touch.. even though you are far apart geographically, you aren't really. :) what country are you in? i hope that your hubby is nearby!!

i am in turkey, with my husband and daughter. yes, the internet is a definite help. my husband is the whole reason we are here--his work, that is.

I agree with Blue, Its cool for you to be concerned about your health in the long run though. But I'll tell you the science part behind Atkins or any other low carb diets. Carbs are used as extra stored fat, fat that the body does not need. It gives us energy, but it also gives us unwanted weight. So when you take away those carbs, the fat intake that you get, your body will need anyway. Our bodies DO need fat, remember that. But those carbohydrates are just being used as the fat our bodies do not need. My mom is on the Atkins Diet, and it completely leveled out her bloodsugar, because she has extremely dangerous diabete's. She is now extremely healthy, and her blood sugar levels are all leveled out. Low carb diets are doing nothing but helping your health out. For now, and in the long run. Gaining weight leads to diabete's and other serious health risks. So when you take away excess dangerous body weight, you gain health benefits. I myself have bettered my self-esteem/weight/over all health doing the Atkins Diet. Doctors are now highly recommending the low carb diets to patients who are at high risks because of obesity. So think about that!!!
