you are definitely not alone on this issue. sometiimes i think the weekends are my whole problem. i end up binging on dessert foods on the weekend. during the week i am "good". i am gaining, losing, gaining the same 15 pounds over again.
Nope, you are not alone at all. During the week I have "structure" , a job to go to, work to do, no refrigerator handy. When the weekend rolls around, you know how it goes. I'm bored.. lets see if there is anything to munch on.. What I've been doing is stepping out of the house. Go for a short walk, even if it only takes 10 minutes, your "hunger" may very well pass. Write a list of 10-15 things you can do instead of eat. Read a chapter of a book you have never finished, weed your garden, clean your bathroom.. whatever.. post it on your refrigerator door so when the urge to eat confronts you, you see a list of other things you could/ should do. Hope that this is helpful.. QB
Weekends are definitely tough! Too much free time....too much food!
especially at all of the fairs and festivals! the aroma in the air is enough to make one fat!
I'm not sure what diet plan you follow, but one alternative to help is to NOT buy all those fattening or sugary foods. I love pizza. But I can control myself from not calling the pizzeria. ;) However, if there is a bag of Doritos in my house, of course I'll eat them. So my goal for now is to NOT have that in my house. I allow myself baked chips or pretzels, but no Doritos. Sugary snacks? Nope - I have raisins instead. Raisins satisfy that sweet tooth and they are healthy. Want something sweet and crunchy? Try Cracklin' Oat Bran. It's sweet, has just a bit of fat (like all oat) and is very healthy. In other words, for me, the best way to avoid bad food is to not buy it. This way, when I look in my cabinets or the fridge, I don't grab something unhealthy. Either I grab something healthy, or I don't grab anything at all. Or I might just grab more cold water - and that helps. In a few minutes, the desire to snack has passed and I don't feel guilty or bloated come Monday. While we are all on diets (and Lord knows I have a LONG way to go), we also have to remember that these are lifestyle changes. We can't just diet now, lose the weight and then go back to snacking on Doritos on the couch watching TV. We have to adjust our lives and learn that a scoop of ice cream is fine, but not half the tub. We have to adjust and either not snack or snack lightly (like grapes or low-fat popcorn) while watching TV, not devour bags of chips or cookies. This way, once we lose that weight, it'll become so ingrained in us NOT to reach for those fattening foods any more, that it won't be a challenge to keep the weight off. Well, at least that's my plan. :D Good luck!
Never go to a store when you're hungry.

You do realize that you are avoiding raisins, by your statement above, because they have carbs which means fat, but that you are on the Atkins diet that WANTS you to eat mostly fat?! See how silly that statement is? Which is better - a 1/4 cup of raisins (two points on the Weight Watchers program) or a prime rib, loaded with fat? Maybe one reason the Atkins diet is so hard for you is that your body would rather have that 1/4 cup of raisins, than tons of eggs, cheese, and beef. Just a thought. Also, as a biochemist, I know the conversion of carbs to fat - and there's a lot of energy spent doing that. Whereas, fat is already fat, not much the body has to do to store it. Of course, I'm not knocking the Atkins diet. A lot of people swear by it. However, it can cause problems (kidney stones) and it is not for everyone. If raisins are not for you, try light popcorn. No good? How about carrots with some fat-free dressing (or, make it regular dressing if you want). Carrots are low in carbs and you get your fat from the dressing. Plus, they are munchy. If that still isn't good, perhaps some light string cheese would be a good snack. String cheese takes a bit of work to eat properly, but it's high in fat and proteins. That might suit your desire to snack. If you argue that the Atkins doesn't allow fruits or veggies, remember, that's only for the first 2 weeks. As time progresses, you can get more carbs and definitely fruits and veggies in your diet. If I recall, by week 3 you are already eating veggies. So if you are only in the first two weeks of the Atkins plan, stick it out - it gets better. Good luck!
Thanks for that thoughtful post Doc. You make a lot of valid points in your post. Fat is still fat no matter how you slice it. :D
I completely understand the whole weekend binge thing. I have such a hard time restraining myself from completely going hog wild on the chips and cheesies. For me, eating is definatly associated with boredom. I have found that if I keep focused on "being busy", I'm less likely to plop down in front of the TV with popcorn loaded with butter or the ever-craving cheesies. How do I keep busy? Housecleaning, catch-up on my letter writing, go for a walk or a drive- anything to keep me from getting the munchies. You know, come to think about it, drinking heaps and heaps of water will also help to keep those munchies away too. It kind of "tricks" your body into thinking it's full. Keep me updated!
