 Hi All I have been following Atkins since May of this year and have lost about 30lb. While that is great, my cravings are worse then before. I see on the South Beach, you are allotted nuts and whole grains, which I am thinking of switching, but scared of gaining wt, as opposed to being stalled. Any suggestions? :?:

Sounds like you're doing pretty well with Atkins. May want to stick with it a bit longer if you're still getting good results. You would probably end up doing induction type stuff twice.

I was on Atkins for about 2 months. I lost 15 lbs. all in my first month, but then I stalled out for the whole 2nd month and got discouraged, so I quit and I gained it all back except 5 lbs. I am now looking into the South Beach Diet and was wonderitg if there is anyone else out there that swiched from Atkins to South Beach and if they like South Beach better.

I broke down and bought the The South Beach Diet by Arthur Agaston M.D. I haven't read a great deal of it yet, but it is in the same vein as the Atkin's Diet, only doesn't seem as strict. I will post a bit more as I learn more.

they are both pretty similar. just more of the current low carb trend that's so popular these days.

And you just described the main problem with them: when you switch back to a more "normal" way of eating, you regain the lost weight. Eating a high protein diet for your lifetime is a seemingly untenable position. Too many foods don't fit the neat category of "low carb" and are still wonderful food for people. Fruit comes to mind immediatedly.

yeah, i've been ate fruit this weekend and i enjoyed it very much. had some nice melons. i love fruit.

I am currently on the South Beach Diet and have been on it for 2 days now, and have lost 5.5 pounds already. I have tried Atkins/Curves they are pretty much the same. The thing I find out about the South Beach Diet is that you actually learn more about what is the "better" sugar for your body and how it speeds up your metabolism. It is basically learning the good foods from the bad foods for the rest of your life. Once in a while you can have the bad foods, but mostly teaches you to stay away from them so that you can stay thin, and dont become fat again. I am going to stay on this diet, because it is very flexible...just have to get through the frist 2 weeks, of changing your maetabolism and then the 2nd Phase is much more BETTER! ;-)

hey debster, congrats on the weight loss! i assume fruit is the "good sugar" and cookie are the bad ones?

I find the diets very different. South beach wants you to eat low fat (dairy, egg substitutes, mayo, fish rather then beef), and says to eat 1200 to 1500 calories daily. Where Atkins says no low fat foods (cream rather then milk, butter, beef) and do not count calories. South Beach is a low fat, calorie restricted diet while Atkins is not. I’m surprise that people don’t see that as a difference. Yes, both diets restrict potatoes, bread, and fruit for the first 2 weeks but to same they are the same is a bit of a stretch.
