Hi... I started a low calorie diet May 1. I have lost 16 pounds so far. I currently weigh 144 and am5'3" and very sedate due to a disabiltity. I have MS and heart problems to name but a few. I try to keep my calories around 1050. During this time I have started really reading labels... lol.. guess you have to, huh? lol... Anyway, as we all know there are some food that are lower in fat calories and some higher fat calories. My questions.... has anyone ever followed a fat calorie diet and if so what should the limit be??? Can you increase your total caloric intake if your do it with low fat calorie foods? TIA... and good luck to all in their endeavors. JO

I dont follow a fat calorie diet perse but I do follow a low calorie diet and I restrict my use of fat to a mimium I use fat free foods when ever I can and I fry only in spray oil I also substitute applesauce for oil in recipies(ie cakes like birthday(i have kids)) I too am disabled due to a long course of predisone I gained copus amount of weight I went from about 250 (yes i know that is over weight) to 365 or over I am now 298.6 I have taken a break from dieting this summer to see if I could maintain my weight and have done so just fine once the kids are back at school and the summer goodies are gone(ie watermelon red peppers thin cucumbers nectrines peaches vnie ripe tomatoes) I wil get back to serious dieting I hope to lose anothe 50 lbs by next summer. i try my hardest to limit fat cholestrol and calories and sugar some days its easy some days its hard and I have to "pick one" I eat from about 1000-2000 a day I do not deny my self most things especially if if it is made with splenda!!! love that stuff!!! I figure this wont help or maybe it will but good luck and long active life

Hi and welcome :) Congratulations on your loss so far! You seem to be doing well. I have a question about using applesauce instead of butter - does it work for most cakes? Do you use any oil/butter at all or just replace half or something? I wanted to try that tip out, but I'm not sure what the result will be. Thanks and good luck with your continued weightloss :)

Hi pigpuppet - I usually do the half oil half applesauce thing because when I do all applesauce, cakes get crumbly and sort of dry. But the taste is all right. I would try it both ways if I were you and see how you like it. For a while I went the whole applesauce route in everything I made, but now I really prefer the 50/50 method, and it hasn't hurt my weight. I use olive oil or Smart Balance.

pipuppet, I do all applesauce for chocolate cakes I like the moistness I get but then I use duncan hines and maybe that makes a difference dont know and for yellow cakes I try to use 1/2 and 1/2 i use only canola oil. I did find that applesauce is no good in brownies though ( my kids wanted them and I knew I couldnt resist) it sorta makes them funky ya gotta use the oil OH yeah "egg beaters" makes a great substitute for the 3 eggs and reduces the whole recipe by 201 calories ( thats at 77 per egg and 30 per egg beater) every little bit helps well good luck and hang in there it will all come together for you and then you will beon your way to skinniness Lady D

thanks for that bit of information, ladyd!
